Searching for "dow-corning" might seem like the easy part. The hard part is knowing which Dow Corning silicone product you actually need—and who to buy it from. TPR is cheaper, easier to process, and fine for low-temperature, low-performance uses. Silicone costs more but handles higher temperatures, resists chemicals, and holds its shape after repeated compression. That compression set resistance is why a silicone keyboard feels more tactile over time.

Honest limitation: if you're in a purely cost-driven, low-exposure application, TPR may work. But don't let anyone call it silicone. And if color consistency is critical—branded keycaps, for example—set a Delta E tolerance before production. Industry standard for critical colors is Delta E < 2 (Pantone guidelines).

Sourcing silicone keyboard components also means thinking beyond raw material. A distributor can get you the material, but you may need a converter that molds the keypad and controls tactility. I usually ask for sample keypads before committing to a production run.

Scenario 4: For body-contact silicone (including a "silicone fleshlight"), verify the cure system

This is where I'd be most careful. "Silicone" isn't one material. It can be platinum-cured or peroxide-cured. For body-contact products—medical parts, baby products, or personal wellness items like a silicone fleshlight—platinum-cured silicone is usually the safer choice because the curing byproducts are less toxic. Peroxide-cured silicone can leave residues that aren't ideal for skin or mucosal contact.

I didn't fully understand the cure-system difference until a supplier quoted us peroxide-cured silicone for a medical component. The price was tempting. One call to the material rep clarified it: the compound would not pass biocompatibility screening. That $4,200 order would have wasted our time and money.

If a supplier says "TPR is basically the same" for body contact, walk away. It isn't. TPR can be porous and may contain processing oils that can leach. Platinum-cured silicone is more expensive, but for skin contact, that cost is the price of doing it right.

Ask for the cure system, the certificate of analysis, and any relevant biocompatibility data before you approve a PO. (Note to self: I really should put this in our standard RFP template.)

How to tell which scenario you're in

Use these three questions:

  1. Does the material touch skin, heat, chemicals, or weather? If yes, don't default to the cheapest TPR or peroxide-cured silicone.
  2. Does the application need a documented spec or certification? If yes, use a distributor that provides lot traceability and avoid handshake deals.
  3. Are you comparing unit price or total applied cost? Include freight, documentation, labor, rework, warranty, and the cost of a missed deadline.

If you're still unsure, ask a technical rep. But don't ask "which is cheapest" without explaining what the part does. That's how you get a quote that looks great and fails in the field.

Bottom line

No miracle material. No universal supplier. Match the scenario to the sourcing strategy.
