If you are reading this because a rush order just landed on your desk, this checklist is for you. I have spent seven years coordinating specialty rubber and plastic materials for industrial clients, and I have handled more urgent requests than I can count—45 last year alone. The most expensive mistakes weren't supplier failures. They were product identity failures.
This guide works for Dow Corning silicone products in any form: sealants, elastomers, silicone rubber plates, medical grade polymer films, and legacy names like Molykote Dow Corning silicone dispersions. It also works for mold-making silicones, because the verification steps are the same even when the size is smaller.
Before You Call a Supplier
Ask yourself three questions:
1. What exact product or part number is on the drawing?
2. What function must the material perform?
3. What documentation will the final inspector require?
If you can't answer all three, a faster phone call won't help.
Step 1: Verify Product Identity, Not Just the Logo
Start with the identifiers. The Dow Corning logo on a drawing or datasheet helps you identify the product family, but it is not a specification. Since Dow took full ownership of the former Dow Corning silicones business in 2016, many products have been renamed or absorbed into newer DOWSIL and Xiameter lines. Searching 'dow-corning' with or without a hyphen is fine for discovery. For ordering, use the full part number, the revision, and the date of the datasheet.
Step 2: Turn Trade Names Into Real Chemistry
Here is a trap I see almost every month. A customer sends a specification that says, roughly, 'Molykote Dow Corning silicone dispersions.' That phrase creates an illusion of precision. Which Molykote product? Silicone dispersion in what solvent? At what solids percentage? Applied by spray, dip, or wipe? Cured at what temperature?
The fastest way to fail is to order a trade name instead of a chemistry. The real conversation goes like this: coating solids, carrier solvent, cure schedule, dry-film thickness, coefficient of friction target, and acceptable temperature range. Once you have those, the trade name becomes optional. If you don't, a well-meaning supplier may send the closest product in the brand family—and close is not good enough during a deadline.
Step 3: Convert 'Rubber Plates' Into a Performance Requirement
'Rubber plates' is one of the most dangerous shorthand terms in our industry. It can mean solid silicone sheet, Neoprene sheet, EPDM gasket plate, or a urethane pad under a press. To source a silicone rubber plate correctly, you need durometer, thickness, length and width tolerances, working temperature, compressive strength if marked, and whether the plate will face oils or solvents.
For a hot or chemical-exposure application, silicone is often the right call because it holds up where general-purpose rubber breaks down. But I've seen buyers order a 70-durometer silicone plate when they needed 40 durometer, and then wonder why their gasket leaked. The material was genuine; the requirement was not defined.
Step 4: Pull the Medical and Compliance Paperwork Before the Quote
Medical grade PTFE is a specific material that is often specified for its chemical resistance, low friction, and high melting point. It is not a generic term, and it is not the same as PTFE scrap or skived film from an unlabeled source. If your application truly needs it, ask for material certification and, if the part touches human tissue or fluids, biocompatibility documentation under ISO 10993 or USP testing.
But here is the thing: some rush orders for medical grade PTFE are actually sealing or gasket applications. PTFE has impressive properties, but it does not compress like an elastomer. A medical grade platinum-cured silicone seal may be a better functional replacement, especially if the original item was a soft membrane or a rubber plug. On paper, PTFE wins on low friction; in soft-seal service, it loses on conformability. Material choice should be based on function, not the prestige of the polymer name.
Step 5: Check Logistics and Shelf Life Before You Commit to 'Overnight'
I cannot count how many times a schedule looked safe because the freight was fast, but the material was sitting on a shelf past its shelf-life code or was in a non-flammable solvent that could not legally go on a passenger plane. Products like silicone dispersions have solvents and flash points; some silicone rubber plates expire after long storage; and an old Molykote product code may have a replacement can number that does not match the quote.
In March last year, a client called at 2:47 PM on a Thursday with a Saturday shutdown deadline. The product number on their drawing matched an old Dow Corning release coating line. We verified the current DOWSIL equivalent by 4 PM, confirmed the warehouse batch was within its shelf life, and had it delivered before the shift started on Friday. The urgent part was not freight; it was verification.
Mistakes That Will Still Kill the Order
These are the mistakes I see after steps 1 through 5 are complete:
Mistake 1: Choosing a Candle Mold Silicone by Hardness Alone
Search 'best candle molds silicone' online and most results lead with Shore hardness. To be fair, hardness matters. But mold performance also depends on tear strength, cured flexibility, and release behavior. A stiff candle mold can be harder to demold and more brittle in thin sections than one with a slightly lower Shore A and better elongation. The same principle applies to silicone rubber plates at industrial scale.
Mistake 2: Assuming One 'Medical Grade' Block Covers Every Test
Medical grade PTFE and medical grade silicone can both pass biocompatibility tests, but not necessarily the same tests. A material intended for a short-duration implant isn't automatically suitable for prolonged skin contact. Ask for the exact test method, such as ISO 10993-5 or ISO 10993-10.
Mistake 3: Forgetting the Cure Chemistry
I believed cure chemistry was standard until I ignored it once. In 2023, I approved an acetoxy-cure silicone sealant for a client who needed a neutral-cure conformal coating. The product had the right family name and the relevant logo, but it released acetic acid during cure and failed the client's corrosion check. We paid for replacement material and a site visit. The lesson now lives at the top of our intake sheet: brand is not chemistry.
The Bottom Line on a Tight Deadline
Efficiency is not about skipping checks. It is about checking the right things in the right order. Standardized verification takes ten minutes; a wrong rush order can add three days. Next time someone gives you a silicone product name with a famous logo behind it, start with the spec number, move to chemistry, define the physical form, ask for compliance evidence, and only then make the logistics call.
Look, I'm not saying every order needs a full technical review. I am saying that the five steps above are the same ones I use when the clock is ticking. The companies that make deadlines are not the ones with the fastest phones. They're the ones who ask better questions before the countdown starts.
