Why a tube of silicone is not a sealing strategy

I'm a procurement manager at a 142-person industrial maintenance contractor, and for the last six years I have owned our $180,000 annual consumables budget. Before I started tracking sealing jobs by total cost, I approved rubber and silicone purchases based on unit price. The reality is that installation labor, cure time, surface prep, and the cost of opening the same joint later dominate the calculation.

  • Wet-applied silicone: low unit price, but it needs a clean and dry surface, tooling, sometimes masking, and cure time before the part can go back into service. When the joint is opened later, the old silicone has to be cut out and reapplied.
  • Pre-formed rubber strip or O-ring: higher unit price in many cases, but installation is usually faster. If access is needed, a compression seal can be removed and reinstalled without waiting for a chemical cure.

In our March 2025 quote from a national maintenance distributor, the price gap between DOW 732 99179 and Dow Corning 785 silicone sealant was around $2 per cartridge. That is small compared with the labor cost of cutting out failed sealant and doing the job twice. The conclusion for this dimension: sealant is not automatically cheap, and a gasket is not automatically expensive.

This part surprises a lot of buyers. Some silicone sealants release a byproduct while curing. If that byproduct is acidic and the substrate is a clear thermoplastic like polycarbonate or acrylic, the plastic can craze, cloud, or crack over time. The damage is not always immediate. It often shows up after the warranty period.

Looking back, I should have reviewed the cure type before ordering 600 cartridges for a clear thermoplastic housing. At the time, the purchasing system listed an approved silicone and I assumed all silicone products were interchangeable. They are not. If the design engineer specifies a neutral-cure sealant or no sealant contact with clear thermoplastic, do not substitute another product because it is in stock.

My rule now is simple: if the part is clear thermoplastic, I ask whether the seal can be physical. A thick rubber strip does not craze plastic, and it does not need a 24-hour wait.

Dimension 3: Dow Corning 785 vs DOW 732, feature selection

Both products carry the Dow Corning name, but they solve different problems. DOW 732 99179 is the multi-purpose maintenance workhorse. It is the one I keep in stock for metal joints, cable penetrations, and general sealing in dry environments. Dow Corning 785 silicone sealant is formulated for sanitary and wet areas. It is built for places where mold or mildew on the sealant surface is unacceptable, like kitchens, bathrooms, and washdown zones.

When you compare cartridges side by side, 785 usually costs a little more than 732. That premium is easy to justify in a food-processing wall or a bathroom renovation, where moisture and cleaning chemicals are part of normal life. It is hard to justify in a dry electrical enclosure. If a leak in a washdown area will force a line shutdown, the extra purchase price is irrelevant. If the application is dry and hidden, the general-purpose product is the responsible buy.

Dimension 4: the O-ring chain vs normal chain lesson
