The cheapest silicone is not a bargain. It is a future invoice. I say that as someone whose job is to reduce spending. I manage procurement for a 90-person company that makes architectural panels. That means I manage an annual materials budget of roughly $2.6 million. For the past six years, I have tracked every material purchase in our ERP system. Our panels carry our name. If a sealant fails, the customer does not blame the sealant manufacturer. They blame us.

I learned this lesson the hard way. In 2023, I approved a switch to an unbranded structural silicone that cost about $1.60 less per cartridge than the product we had been using. Maybe $1.40; I would need to look at the old PO. It looked like the same material. The datasheet used the same polymer language. The first samples passed our adhesion test. As a cost controller, I was satisfied. What could go wrong? Plenty. Three months later, we saw blisters and adhesion loss on panels stored outdoors during wet weather. That experience changed my view. For anything visible or structural, quality is not just a supplier issue. It is brand image. It decides whether a product is remembered as reliable or as a problem. When a customer sees a cracked sealant or a leaking window, they don't know which sealant brand we bought. They only know our product failed.

Why I no longer treat silicone as a commodity

Procurement training tells you to treat commodity materials as interchangeable. If the spec says silicone sealant, get three quotes and pick the lowest number. That works when failure is cheap. It fails when failure is visible, structural, or difficult to replace. A sealant joint is all three.

Today, when our projects call for structural glazing, I specify the Dow Corning 995 silicone structural sealant. That decision is not about brand loyalty. It is about evidence. With this product, I can point to documented weathering performance, adhesion testing, lot traceability, and technical support from people who understand glazing. When an engineer asks whether it will work on a specific substrate, I don't have to make up an answer. For a procurement person, that saves weeks of phone calls before a bid is even approved.

I have made the same calculation with many Dow Corning products over the years. The reason keeps coming back to one thing: the product does what the datasheet says, order after order. That consistency is worth more than a cheaper price from a source that cannot prove its process.

Yes, silicone is a polymer, but that is not a spec

If you search the phrase is silicone a polymer, the short answer is yes. Silicone is a polymer, usually understood as a synthetic polymer with a silicon-oxygen backbone and organic side groups. But that chemical detail doesn't tell you whether a sealant will last outdoors, resist wind load, bond to glass, or survive thermal movement.

Not all polymers behave the same. The same is true inside the silicone family. Household caulk and structural glazing sealants may both be silicone. One may meet a recognized structural standard such as ASTM C1184; the other may simply be a waterproofing filler. When someone tells me their product is the same because it is silicone, that is the moment I start asking harder questions.

What coating PTFE does to the rest of the assembly

Another reason I stopped trusting product category names is compatibility. If a drawing calls for coating PTFE on a metal part, that surface becomes low-energy. PTFE is excellent when you want low friction or easy release. It is terrible when you want sealant to adhere.

We learned this after ordering coated brackets without masking the sealant areas. The silicone beaded up on the surface instead of bonding. We lost three weeks of production time. The coating was fine. The process was wrong. In a manufacturing environment, that is still a quality problem.

An o-ring dimensions chart is a basic quality test

The same logic applies to small components. I often ask a potential supplier for an o-ring dimensions chart. I am not collecting paperwork. I am checking whether the supplier works from the same industry standards we use, usually AS568A or ISO 3601. One chart we received did not line up with the standard dash numbers on our drawing. The O-rings would have fit in a drawer but not in the cylinder.

That is the kind of detail that seems small until it becomes a leak. And a leak is the kind of thing a customer remembers.

Am I saying never buy anything without a brand?

No. I still approve generic products when the risk is low and the evidence is solid. A masking tape does not need the same file folder as a structural sealant. But for visible, safety-related, or hard-to-replace parts, the burden of proof should be on the cheaper source.

If a supplier without a track record can produce complete test reports, lot control records, reference projects, and real technical application support, I will consider it. But I will not accept a datasheet that copies the wording of an established manufacturer. The word generic is not automatically bad. The word approved is what matters. In engineered materials, the brand premium is often the price of having someone accountable behind the formula for decades.

Final view: quality is brand image

I still negotiate. I still update my cost spreadsheets and compare total cost of ownership. But now the biggest line in that model is not the unit price. It is the cost of explaining why our product failed on a customer's site.

Cheap silicone, an out-of-spec O-ring, or an unplanned coating problem can each erase thousands of dollars in savings. They also change how people talk about your company. Quality is not a nice-to-have. It is how a customer decides if you are worth trusting. I would rather be the buyer who paid a little more for the right product than the buyer who had to explain a failure that should have been prevented.
