Last April, I opened a brown shipping carton on the loading dock and pulled out a sealed poly bag. I knew something was off before I opened it: the bag was black, and our spec called for translucent material. Inside were 280 O-rings that were exactly the right diameter and exactly the wrong material.
The replacement order was supposed to fix a leaking fitting in a food-contact water line. The old rings were certified silicone. The packing slip said Buna-N, a nitrile compound. My buyer had released the order because the warehouse lead told him it matched the O-ring sizes chart.

We rejected the batch and sent it back. The supplier was not happy. The line waited two extra days for the correct parts.
The Same Mistake, in a Different Tube
That same week, the lesson repeated itself in a surprising place. I walked into the maintenance shop and saw a work order for a skylight repair. A clear plastic sheet—polycarbonate, cut to fit—was leaning against the wall. The maintenance supervisor had grabbed a tube of cheap sealant from the janitorial shelf.

Respect the Boundary
I don’t expect one supplier to be an expert in every polymer. The good ones tell you when they are outside their lane. The vendor that earned my trust this time was the one who said, 'If this were fuel, I would point you to FKM. For hot water and ozone, the silicone spec is reasonable.' That boundary is not weakness. That is competence.
The same goes for sealants. Dow Corning 790 silicone building sealant is not every sealant. It is not a universal answer. But it was the specified answer for that substrate, that joint, and that service condition.
Size is not a specification. Neither is a category name. The next time you see the word equivalent on a packing slip, ask what it actually means. If the answer does not include lot numbers, material data, and a real technical justification, you are probably holding the O-ring version of a convenient lie.
