  • Non-critical parts that are cheap to replace and unlikely to cause harm.

Temperature ranges matter too. Dow Corning products have published service limits, and a sealant or elastomer is only as good as its match to your actual environment. If you exceed the limits, no brand will save you.

What I recommend is making the spec a test, not a preference. Ask for a sample. Run a quick adhesion test. Bend the part. Soak a TPE scrap in isopropanol and measure it after 24 hours. Data beats opinions.

Here's something vendors won't always tell you: distributors often have flexibility on packaging and delivery terms. Asking how to reduce handling cost usually works better than asking for a price cut.

Bottom line

I'm not here to sell Dow Corning products. I'm here to argue that the question "which costs less?" is incomplete. Add failure rate, time, and trust to the calculation, and the picture often flips. I'm not 100% sure today's exact price gaps are the same as the ones we saw in 2023—commodity silicone prices move around. Verify current quotes, as of early 2025. But the logic doesn't move. The cheapest invoice is not the lowest cost. The lowest total cost is the one that survives the real world.
